flicker response
I was pretty suprised by all the posts on flicker. I think some people took it too far with restricting words. I understand that some words can be offensive and biased, but i don't believe in restricting and banning words. I understand how some words can be sexist, such as the example they gave as dog/bitch, but i don't think most of the english language is like that. I think that we should avoid using such words that can be offensive, but not necessarily ban it. There are a lot of words that are offensive, but i don't believe women is one of them. There was the example that "girl" is offensive, but i disagree. I don't mind someone referring to me as girl or callin me girl because i don't find it offensive. Someone posted a response saying that its jsut the way you interpret and precieve something, and i totally agree with that. I fell that some words are offensive to some, and just normal to others. It depends on the person. I also think that some words can be used regularly, but if used in a certain way, they can be offensive. Some people might over analize a word and find a way to make it offensive. I don’t believe any word should be banned, but ones that are questionable should be avoided are carefully used. In our book it tells us to use words that relate to the audience, and ot make sure that it doesn’t offend anyone. As with anything, certain words should be used with precaution, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be used at all.
